In Morocco the Berber Tours agent, Daoud, was very good — he really tailored the program for us and was very flexible. We loved the Riad in Marrakech — it was such a pleasant oasis in the midst of the chaos of the Medina. The trip on back roads was hair-raising but fascinating, as we passed agricultural villages where life has not changed in a thousand years.
The dinner with Daoud's family in Zagora was a highlight, as was the overnight in the Bedouin tent in the Sahara (this was a last minute change that he suggested and it was very worthwhile, as the desert is prohibitively hot between noon and 5 pm, and by staying overnight we were able to avoid being there at mid-day. Plus the night sky is a phenomenon not to be missed).
One small caution to others — Daoud advised us to save our shopping for Zagora; however, we were a bit disappointed with the selection. So my advice to others is, if you feel like shopping in Marrakech, don't hold back — the selection there far surpasses what is to be found in the small villages, and from what we saw, prices did not seem appreciably different. The best village goods available are the classic green pottery and carpets which are made by the Bedouins.
Overall, the trip was a fabulous success! There wasn't a day that went by where one of our kids didn't thank us and tell us what a great time they were having.
