de la VegaMy name is Luis de la Vega and last month (June 2005) I spent about 9-10 days traveling with my girlfriend Natalia around Morocco. We spent 7 of those 10 days guided by Berber Tours and enjoyed them to the fullest.

I set up my tour over the internet and spent roughly a week emailing back and forth with Jeffrey, one of the co-founders of Berber Tours. Jeffrey's emails were extremely easy to understand and they spelled out every detail of our itinerary. The prices he offered for different packages were acceptable and we picked one that appeared to be tailor made for us. He has had considerable experience in these tours and based on information I provided him about my girlfriend and I he put together an unforgettable trip.

We first met Daoud, Jeffrey's partner, in Marrakech as he picked us up at our riad to begin the long, but comfortable, journey to Zagora and M'hamid. We spent a night in a beautiful hotel in Zagora, and the next morning were off for the beginning of our camel trek. Our guide was Daoud's nephew, Khalid, who was also extremely knowledgeable and made our stay in the desert as pleasant as possible. Our trip evolved as the days passed and turned into a camel trek/4x4 adventure that eventually led us to Erg Chegaga (we became ill with "stomach down" as they call it and were evacuated in 4x4 trucks, only to return to the big dunes the following day). Our trip ended with dinner with Daoud's family and we were once again escorted back to our riad in Marrakech by Daoud, Khalid, and Jeffrey. To top it all off, they even offered to escort us around Marrakech during the rest of our stay.

In summary, I can say that Berber tours is a fine organization that makes customized tours for people looking to avoid the beaten path at a reasonable price. To attempt to put together a tour like this by myself, without advice from any local Moroccans, would have been impossible. Berber Tours is experienced and I would recommend that you follow Jeffrey and Daoud's advice in terms of hotel bookings, trip lengths, and what time of the year to plan your outing. Our trip had all meals/hotels/water covered. We ate at excellent restaurants and the hotels were top notch. I know that my next trip to Morocco will include Berber Tours, regardless of whether it is on the coast, in the desert, or in the mountains. If you would like some additional information and would like to contact me personally, I welcome you to do so.
