ITINERARY

Day 1: Casablanca

Arrival at Casablanca Mohamed V airport. Welcome and assistance; an orientation tour of Casablanca, including the Habbous quarter, the United Nations square, the exterior of the Royal Palace and an interior visit of the Hassan II mosque, one of the Islamic world's stunning monuments. Night at 4-star hotel. (D)

Day 2: Casablanca / El-Jadida (62 miles)

El-Jadida comes truly alive in summer. Its many fine beaches attract primarily Moroccans on holidays, and there are extremely few Western tourists around here. Holidaying Moroccans are about as easygoing as you could wish for. No hassle and hustle, only great hospitality and curiosity. This happens everywhere, at the beach, in cafés, in bars, in the streets. Mingling hours, usually an hour or two in Morocco may here stretch five to six hours into late evenings.

With some patience and insight into its history the old Portuguese town can be rewarding, but everyone will appreciate the Portuguese Cistern.

In El-Jadida miles of sand begin right where the town center ends. Outside the city, some kilometers away, you can experience a moussem, which is a religious festival held in commemoration of a holy man inside popular Islam. This one is in July/August. It's fascinating to watch to what extent Muslims mix religion and trade. The whole festival area is made up of booths, and there are even a couple of discos, put up just for the moussem.

Explore the city of Marrakech and visit sites such as Jemaa el-Fna Square in the heart of Marrakech. Discover the famous red city, visit the immense souk (market), and plunge into the excitement of the place Jemaa el Fna in the heart of Morocco. Be enchanted by the dancers, snake-charmers, jugglers, narrators, singers. Cool off with an orange juice in front of the numerous workshops. Night at 4-star hotel. (B, D)

Day 3: El-Jadida / Safi (87 miles)

Safi is mainly modern, as it is home to a modern fishing port and a diversified industry base. If you enter the city along the most common route, you'll see the industry before you see the city. But don't let this make you turn around and leave. The city itself is charming, with an old city very much alive. Here you might be tempted to buy pottery, seeing all shapes and patterns in a lot of shops, but then you are in one of the best places in Morocco for pottery. There are plenty of opportunities to walk around and look at people working on their pottery. When you have been in places like Moulay Idriss you will have seen the beautiful covering on the roofs which are made out of green tiles. Safi is one of the places where these tiles are produced. Night at 4-star hotel. (B, D)

Day 4: Safi / Essouaria (93 miles)

This day is dedicated to relaxation on the beach of the coastal city of Essaouira. The fortifications of the old town shelter Portuguese, French and Berber architecture. With its whitewashed houses, quiet places, friendly cafes, numerous artisans and the delicious fresh fish, Essaouira is a charming place to visit. Night at 4-star hotel. (B, D)

Day 5: Essouaria

Second day at Essouaria in order to enjoy the wonderful beach!
Night at 4-star hotel. (B, D)

Day 6: Essouaria / Agadir (118 miles)

A thoroughly modern city and "tourist-trap," Agadir's prime attraction is its 10km of broad sandy beach and an average of 300 days of sunshine a year. In summer Agadir, which is cooler than the interior of the country, is prone to morning sea fogs, while the winter climate is often sunny and clear with temperature in the mid-20s C. The beach is huge and impeccably clean. Lining its promenade are hotels, beach clubs, bars, cafes and restaurants. At the center of the bay is a ridge of rocks, exposed at low tide, which shelters much of the beach from Atlantic breakers and makes for safe swimming most of the time (flags provide warnings of dangerous conditions). Night at 4-star hotel. (B, D)

Day 7: Agadir / Sidi Ifni (118 miles)

Sidi Ifni is a delightful little seaside town and a former Spanish enclave, which is a quaint and comfortable drive south of Agadir over country roads and along the coast. This charming little city has a Spanish flavor due to it architecture and is a refreshing get-away from the hustle and bustle of busy Agadir, especially in the summer. Night at 4-star hotel. (B, D)

Day 8: Sidi Ifni

Second day in Sidi Ifni in order to enjoy the wonderful beach!
Night at 4-star hotel. (B, D)

Day 9: Sidi Ifni / Taroudannt (118 miles)

Travel to Taroudannt. This little city is affectionately called "The Little Marrakech." It is a small city of only about 50,000 people and it has lost none of its medieval charm in the 21st century. With its high fortress city walls and its lively souk (market) it will be one of the highlights of your trip to southern Morocco. Night at 4-star hotel. (B, D)

Day 10: Taroudannt / Marrakech (174 miles)

Return to Marrakech via the Tizi-n-Test pass through the Atlas Mountains where you will the life of rural Morocco. Spend the afternoon further exploring the "Red City" of Marrakech with its gardens, such as Jardin Majorelle or its many historical places such as the Koutoubia Mosque or the Royal Saadian Tombs. Night at 4-star hotel. (B, D)

OPTIONAL: Dinner show at Chez Ali's.

Day 11: Marrakech

The day will be devoted to sightseeing in Marrakech, the second oldest Imperial city known as the "Pearl of the South" and home to the Saadian tombs, the Koutoubia Mosque, the Bahia Palace and the Menera Gardens. In the afternoon, explore the souks (markets) and the world famous Djemaa El Fna Square, the "heart" of Marrakech, which offers various entertainments (story tellers, acrobats, snake-charmers, magicians, etc.) Night at 4-star hotel. (B, D)

Day 12: Marrakech / Ourika Valley (25 miles)

The Ourika Valley is an attractive string of villages along the dangerous river of the same name. The landscape is fresh and green, and in summer a popular destination when Marrakech is boiling. But in winter the Oued Ourika can be dangerous, and floods sometimes destroy villages, roads and tear up trees. The Ourika Valley starts about 30 km south of Marrakech, and the tarmac road will slowly bring you 37 km into the valley until you reach Setti Fatima, famous for its seven waterfalls.

Houses of the valley rest majestically above the river. Merging with the mountain, many of these are worth a stop for a snap-shot and even the steep climb up. The main attraction of Aghbalou must be the stoneblock mosque, a rare change from the standard mosque in Morocco. It has an appearance which resembles more of a church. But since Aghbalou is the largest village along the Oued Ourika, it is also a popular place to stop en route. A popular place to pass an hour or two is the nice café along the river. Extremely basic, with an uneven ground, but the food is surprisingly good. Night at 4-star hotel. (B, D)

Day 13: Marrakech / Casablanca (150 miles)

A free morning in Marrakech before your departure in the afternoon to Casablanca's Mohamed V International Airport. Night at 4-star hotel near the airport. Night at 4-star hotel. (B, D)

Hotels in Morocco:

Berber Tours uses a variety of different 3-star and 4-star hotels around the country for our 4x4 tours. While we cannot guarantee a specific hotel, we can guarantee that ALL of the hotels we use are clean and comfortable and will have many of the amenities you would expect to find in any hotel. The hotels we use also offer either breakfast or dinner, but usually both, as part of the hotel stay. Where available, as in Marrakech, we can also offer at the 4-star hotel package rate, the option of staying at one of the many quaint and comfortable riads within the Medina. However, at a riad, usually only breakfast is offered as part of the cost for staying there.

Hotel standards in Morocco and Europe DIFFER from those in the United States; in most cases, a "3-star" hotel by U.S. standards is the same as a "4-star" hotel in Morocco and Europe.
